I wanted to take a minute and reach out to small business owners alike with some useful information about how Google works, and a few simple ways to start boosting your website on Google.
The first being content. Content is KING. To be optimized for Google's search algorithms, you really need to have anywhere between 1500-2000 words on your home page. Now, that includes your menu, your footer, picture titles... everything. When I go to do a website audit for someone, this is the first thing I check. You can highlight all your content, copy, and paste it into a word counter. (just search word counter on google and choose one.. doesn't matter which one) Once you know how many words you have you can figure out how many more you need to add to begin your ascent in Google's eyes.
Lastly, keywords. Very important. This is how you are found when someone types a keyword or phrase into the Google search bar. You want to target these on each page you have on your website. The rule of thumb is 1 keyword for every 100-125 words. You want them to come up naturally in your content and not overdo it. Google looks for what's called keyword stuffing. Meaning using the same word over and over or in unnatural ways. So for the home page, you can target 10-15 words if you have 1500-2000 words. Each service page should have 500 words of optimized text and within that, you can target around 5 keywords. By doing this you will start popping up in searches for relevant keyword terms, putting you in front of your desired audience.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to SEO, but it's a start that you should be able to measure with increased visibility and hopefully because of that, more customers.
